Shrek Film Analysis.

Shrek is a animated comedy film and typical conventions of an animation are:
  • Bright colouring.
  • Usually contains talking toys or fictional characters.
  • There's usually a good side and an evil side and some kind of fight between the two.
  • There's usually always a happy ending and good defeats the bad.
  • Usually aimed at kids and parents as family films.
A techincal code of the film opening would be the bright colours used in the film and the cheerful and upbeat music used to create a sense of happiness and enjoyment for the audience.

The key signifiers of the film being an animation would be the brightly coloured characters, the music used and the fact that characters themselves are fictional or in some way different, for example in 'Shrek' one of the characters 'Donkey' is an animal that speaks and Shrek himself is an ogre which is a fictional creature.

The opening shows that the film itself is centred around fantasy and fairy tale from the fact that they're are talking animals and some well known characters from fairy tales such as the dwarves from 'Snow White' the wolf from 'Little Red Riding Hood' and others. There's also a dragon featured and the trailers shows us that Shrek has been sent to kill it and save a Princess named Fiona. From this we can assume that there is going to be some sort of fight between and evil and generally Dragons are associated with evil and so we know that Shrek is the good.

From the Fairly Tale references, the bright colours and the cheerful music, we can tell that this film is friendly for all but is mostly aimed at young families. However, i think most audiences would watch this.
